The Solution: Kingpinless Stainless Steel Casters with Solid Polyurethane Wheels
After reviewing their application — equipment weight, wash-down frequency, floor type, and how the equipment moved through the facility — we specified a heavier-duty stainless steel caster built around three critical upgrades:
- Kingpinless Stainless Steel Swivel Housing.
A standard swivel caster uses a kingpin — a bolt or rivet — to hold the swivel assembly together. Under heavy loads and repeated use, kingpins wear, bend, and eventually fail. A kingpinless design eliminates that failure point entirely, replacing it with a large-diameter double ball raceway that distributes load across the full circumference of the swivel. The result is a dramatically stronger swivel mechanism that holds up under heavy loads and continuous use.
The housing is fully polished 304 stainless steel, which resists corrosion from cleaning agents, bleach solutions, and acidic or alkaline sanitizers without degrading.
- Stainless Steel Ball Bearings — Wheel and Swivel
This was the single most important change. The previous casters had standard bearings that were not designed to survive repeated chemical wash-downs. Stainless steel ball bearings resist corrosion from water and industrial cleaning chemicals, maintaining smooth operation indefinitely in environments where standard bearings fail within weeks or months.
We specified stainless steel ball bearings in both the wheel hub and the swivel raceway. Both points of rotation need to be protected — specifying stainless in one location but not the other still leaves a failure point.
- Solid Polyurethane Wheel (and Nylon Option)
We supply these casters with solid polyurethane wheels as the primary wheel option. Solid polyurethane will not absorb water or cleaning chemicals, will not crack or chip under load, and provides smooth, low-resistance rolling across concrete and coated floors. For applications requiring an even harder wheel, we also supply a white nylon wheel option, which offers higher load capacity and excellent chemical resistance.
Unlike rubber (which degrades with chemical exposure) or hollow wheels (which can fill with water and become a contamination risk), solid wheels are the right choice for food processing environments.
